SCC Census Information Recruiting Session

By Richard D. Ackley, Jr.

Last Thursday, the Mole Lake Casino & Lodge’s Conference Center filled quickly with people eager to learn about 2020 Census job opportunities in the area. Approximately 20 people gathered to learn more about job opportunities as 2020 Census takers, also referred to as enumerator positions.

The Census Bureau is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Commerce. It has established specific guidelines that pertain to gathering census data on federally recognized Tribal lands, which are referred to in census documents as American Indian Reservations – federal (federal AIRs).

Each attendee received a packet of information with handouts about the job and about the importance of supporting the successful completion of the 2020 Census. The focus of the event, according to organizer Coleen Poler, a Mole Lake Tribal Member, was on recruiting.

Coleen explained each handout and why it is important that Tribal Members participate so an accurate count can be done now and for the future. “We have been passing out census information to area townships so that we can all work together,” Coleen explained.

Coleen also shared, “Our Tribe did a mass mailing to get the word out and today’s meeting is all about recruiting. A census takers job is very flexible and workers can actually choose hours and days to work.”

Following the meeting, each attendee enjoyed a buffet lunch and received a bag of gifts. Door prizes helped bring a happy and fun-filled end to the session.
