Summer Youth Workers Accomplish Many Projects

By Tesheena Honkala, Teen Workforce Development Coordinator

This past June, the ACE team hired 13 youth workers between the ages of 13 and 17. They began their work this Summer by helping with cleaning out houses and getting ready for the Strawberry Moon Pow Wow. The Youth had a stand at the Pow Wow. They cleaned and mowed the playgrounds, the baseball field, Mole Lake and Sand Lake beaches, boat landings and helped mow several yards.

This year was a little different from last year. On Tuesday, the Youth went to different departments, and some helped at various departments throughout the week. The Youth helped with the lodge build and planted new trees at Hoffman’s.

The ACE program offered a light breakfast and lunch to the Youth workers. During our lunch hours, we had speakers come in, including Lieutenant Tony Crum and Sergeant DJ Wilson with K-9 officer Thunder, from the Forest County Sheriff’s Department. Noel Vandiver from the WisDOT Highway Construction Skills Training Program and Vanny Poler also spoke to the Youth. Thank you all for taking time to speak.

The Youth participated in the Healing Circle Walk and Run on July 10th, and the language class and lacrosse on Wednesdays. Makoons, the language instructor, attended in person one day, which was a great experience. We did one concession stand day and the money made went to the Youth Center.

The Youth ended the program out at Hoffman’s where each Youth worker had the opportunity to wood burn their names onto a wooden apple and hang their names on a tree.

Thank you to all the Youth for all your hard work and dedication to the Summer program.

Participating Youth included Armando Aguirre, Makye Decorah Toyebo, Alexander McGeshick, Katrina McGeshick, Aiden Olds, Katie Quade, Zachary Randall and Alliyah VanZile.

A huge shout out to Alexandr Aguirre, Logan Munday, Derek Olds, Natalia Tuckwab and Elliott Amundson on your last Summer with this program. Congratulations and good luck in the future.
