Permits Available for Bough Harvesting and Firewood

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has forest product permits available for individuals looking to harvest items like boughs or cutting firewood.

In addition to boughs and firewood, permits are also available for Christmas trees, birch bark and assorted twigs and stems through a Forest Products Removal Permit. Some permits are available as a free use permit.

Individuals interested in obtaining a forest product permits are encouraged to contact the Ranger District Office closest to the location of harvesting activities. Office staff are available to answer questions, share maps of harvest areas and outline areas to avoid.

Permits may be purchased from Ranger District Offices across the Forest. Firewood cutting permits are $20 ($5 per/cord, four cord minimum). Bough permits are $80 for up to two tons of material. Additional material may be purchased for $40/ton. Christmas tree permits are $5/tree with a limit of five trees per person. Fourth graders are eligible to receive a free Christmas tree permit through the Every Kid Outdoors program. In order for students to receive a free tree permit from offices, they must present a valid pass or voucher printed from the Every Kid Outdoors website at www.EveryKidOutdoors.gov.
