GLITC President’s Letter to Kwik Trip

As President of the Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. (GLITC), a consortium of twelve federally recognized Indian tribes in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I’m taking this opportunity to bring to your attention the type of harmful, anti-tribal content that is being published in On Wisconsin Outdoors, distributed by Kwik Trip. The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Board of Directors is especially disappointed with the recent March/ April and May /June issues as they take particular aim at tribal nations in Wisconsin and beyond.

Along with federal and state entities, tribes are the third sovereign government bodies in the United States. Yet On Wisconsin Outdoors seeks to diminish indigenous nations with articles that are dismissive of tribal sovereignty and culture. The March/ April issue bemoans “deference” given to tribal government representatives during wolf management plan testimony, implying sovereign prerogatives to speak first are unusual and unfair.
