Elder Nutrition Celebrates World Diabetes Day

On November 14th, the Elder Nutrition Center will be hosting a celebration for World Diabetes Day from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event is open to the public, and a meal will be provided to attendees.

The event is being hosted by Jamie Bauknecht, SCC Aging Director, and Cheri Nemic, Dietitian with the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council (GLITC). Cheri is part of a GLITC program that visits the Tribes and hosts events for the Elderly and fitness activities four times a year. Jamie is also the SCC Diabetic Grant Manager, and so he decided it was a good collaboration to work together with Cheri to host this event.

The event will offer information on healthy eating, healthy beverages, physical activity and potential health impacts. Jamie will also perform blood sugar and blood pressure checks for anyone who would like the tests.

A representative from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) will also be attending to take polls on potential health programs to start within the community. The program is looking to see what group activities the community would like to have, such as a walking program or a tai chi class.
