40th Anniversary of Voigt Decision

January 27, 2023, marked 40 years since the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled in favor of Ojibwe reserved rights in the Wisconsin 1837 and 1842 Ceded Territory.

The GLIFWC Public Information Office is pleased to present our latest short film in the Ogichidaa Storytellers series Rise of the Walleye Warrior: Lac Courte Oreilles v. Voigt Decision, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the landmark case and its legacy in Ojibwe Country.

The title is intentionally worded to have a dual meaning – referring to Lac du Flambeau’s Tom Maulson as well as all the spearfishermen who faced off with angry mobs during the 1986-1991 protest era. The video is also designed to be forward-looking, promoting cooperation with resource management partners.

Miigwech and be well everyone!
