Memorial Day Celebration

Memorial Day Celebration

Dean VanZile has a standing date every year on Memorial Day. For years, he volunteered on Memorial Day, and now it’s part of his job – and it’s a labor of love.

“It’s part of my job, and I’m a Veteran. We need to honor those who have fallen and passed away. We need to remember them. That’s why I love doing this.”

This past Monday, Dean welcomed community members at the Mole Lake Cemetery for a Memorial Day Celebration. The Swamp Creek Boys opened the celebration, and prayers were given by Judge Fred Ackley, Jr. Brianna McCarthy from Crandon played taps.

Following the raising of the flags, Dean presented Veterans in attendance with a pin honoring their service to our country and to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. More than 20 Veterans were in attendance.

Preparations began early, with the group receiving a complimentary breakfast from an anonymous donor. Art VanZile placed flags on the graves of Veterans. Dean’s uncle, Tony “Bones” VanZile, assisted with removing brush. Dean expressed thanks to his brother Carl, cousin Art and his nephew Augie for all of their help.

Following the Celebration, everyone enjoyed a potluck lunch at the Elderly Center. Chi Miigwech to everyone who gave of their time for this special event.

Special thanks to Steph VanZile and Vickie Ackley for the photos!
