Fun on the Ice

Sunday welcomed sunshine and temperatures below zero, but that didn’t stop fishermen and women from enjoying the 3rd Annual Sokaogon Chippewa Ice Fishing Jamboree on Oak Lake.

The annual event welcomes community members and ice fishing enthusiasts for a day of fishing, food and raffles.

This event would not happen without the dedicated people who planned and coordinated all aspects of the event. This year, the event raised $16,000, which is an increase over previous years.
“We do this event every year to help reduce the northern population so that we can bring different species to Oak Lake, including walleye. We get a good turnout, and have many prizes worth of hundreds of dollars,” said Arlyn Ackley, Jr., Vice-Chairman of the Tribal Council.
“We are trying to reduce the northern pike, as they were not in the lake historically.  The lake will be managed long-term for large mouth bass and pan fish (bluegill and yellow perch), and although we haven’t stocked walleye in the lake yet, we will likely be doing so in the next few years,” said Mike Preul, SCC’s Fisheries Biologist.

Families bundled up, spent time on the ice, and enjoyed burgers and brats in the heated tent.

“We get a lot of help for this event. Sokaogon Finance employees helped set up, and the Casino employees helped with food and beverages. The proceeds of this event will help with next year’s event,” Arlyn continued.
