Environmental and Fisheries Acquire New Drone

Story by Nathan Podany

Thanks to the work of Mike Preul, Mole Lake Fisheries Director, the Fisheries and Environmental Departments have a new monitoring tool at their disposal.

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro is capable of capturing high-quality video and photos. It has the potential to process normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images, which uses near-infrared light refraction to create a map of color-indexed zones of different types of vegetation. Working together, the two departments plan on collecting remote data to help further their environmental monitoring and remediation projects.

The new drone will be an important aid to wild rice monitoring and density observance, hydraulic impediment tracking, shoreline mapping and invasive species detection. As the two departments become more familiar with the technology, they hope to find additional uses for it.
